RAPID COMMUNICATION Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) Isolation From Bone Marrow: HHV-6-Associated Bone Marrow Suppression in Bone Marrow Transplant Patients

چکیده
These studies tested the hypothesis that human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) can cause posttransplant bone marrow (BM) suppression in BM transplant (BMT) patients. Fifteen adult patients who received T-lymphocyte-depleted, allogeneic BM transplants and who developed posttransplant BM suppression were studied. Detailed chart reviews were used to divide the patients into two groups: (1) those with diagnosed BM suppression (DBMS) and (21 those with idiopathic BM suppression (IBMS). BM aspirates obtained from the patients at the onset of BM suppression were subjected to an HHV-6 isolation procedure using mitogen-stimulated blood mononudear cells. BM specimens obtained from another population of BMT patients solely to document engraftment

Human herpesvirus 6 activity (HHV-6) was studied in 15 allogeneic and 11 autologous marrow transplantation patients. After transplantation, HHV-6 was isolated from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 12 of 26 patients (6 allogeneic and 6 autologous). All isolates were variant B. Eleven of 26 and 12 of 19 patients showed salivary shedding of HHV-6 DNA before and after transplantation, resp...

The prototype member of the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily, cytomegalovirus (CMV), is the most important infectious pathogen in transplant recipients, including those receiving bone marrow or stem cell grafts. Overt CMV disease such as pneumonitis is notoriously difficult to treat. Antiviral prophylaxis, rapid diagnostic tests to identify CMV infection, and preemptive antiviral chemotherapy are si...

We studied 228 consecutive stem cell transplant recipients, screened for reactivation of human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) in peripheral blood and other specimens as clinically indicated by means of qualitative polymerase chain reaction. Among them, 197 received an allograft and 31 autograft. Ninety-six of 228 patients (42.1%) showed HHV-6 reactivation in peripheral blood and 129 of 228 (56.6%) demon...

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) DNA levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells were prospectively evaluated in 20 cytomegalovirus-seronegative allogeneic marrow transplant patients and in 10 healthy control subjects. Blood and saliva specimens obtained weekly for 3 months after transplant were evaluated by quantitative HHV-6 polymerase chain reaction. One of 20 patients experienced primary HHV-6 ...
